Description
Elongate mineral particles (EMPs) remain one of the most significant occupational and environmental concerns worldwide. EMPs can belong to various classes of materials, including commercial asbestos and naturally occurring asbestos (NOA). Two types of particles may have elongate shape: true asbestiform fibers and non-asbestiform mineral fragments.
This PDC will introduce you to the topic of quantitative risk assessment in application to various types of elongate particles. We will present the following topics: 1) toxicology of EMPs; 2) metrics and parameters relevant for distinguishing between asbestiform and non-asbestiform EMPs; 3) dose-response relationships for fiber types, sizes, and habits; 4) predicting various health outcomes of exposure; and 6) risk communication for EMP exposure. Applying the risk assessment approach to exposures from occupational activities, residential soil contamination, and commercial talcum powder will be demonstrated.
