The session, Risk Assessment for Elongate Mineral Particles (EMPs): Scientific Findings and Practical Methodology, will address current frameworks for exposure assessment and risk characterization for asbestos and other fibrous minerals. Topics will include quantitative risk modeling for mesothelioma and lung cancer, differentiation of asbestiform fibers from cleavage fragments, and evaluation of relative potency among mineral types.
Through case studies and practical examples, the presentation will examine risk acceptability considerations for occupational and community exposures, including legacy asbestos in buildings, naturally occurring asbestos, and mineral fiber exposures associated with mining and industrial materials. The session is part of the conference education program and is intended for laboratory professionals, regulators, public health specialists, and scientists involved in asbestos and mineral particle risk evaluation.
The ASBESTOS 2026 Conference, presented by the Faculty of Asbestos Management Australia and New Zealand (FAMANZ) and the Asbestos and Silica Safety Eradication Agency (ASSEA), brings together international researchers, regulators, and practitioners to address current scientific and regulatory issues in asbestos management and prevention of asbestos-related disease.
Additional information about the conference and program is available on the ASBESTOS 2026 Conference website.
