Dr. Ann Wylie, Senior Scientific Advisor at C&IH and Professor Emerita in the Department of Geology at the University of Maryland, will be joined by Dr. Andrey Korchevskiy, C&IH’s Director of Research and Development, for a podium presentation in Session One: Novel Research Findings on Asbestos Health Effects. Their talk, titled “Rigidity of Elongate Mineral Particles and Its Importance for Toxicological Studies,” explores how the physical characteristics of mineral particles influence their biological impact.
In Session Two: Geology, Mineralogy, Nomenclature, and Terminology, Dr. Korchevskiy will deliver a second lecture titled “Classification Method for Amphibole Habits Based on Particle Dimensions: Rationale and Methodological Basis.” This presentation introduces a new approach to categorizing amphibole particle habits, aimed at improving accuracy in mineral characterization and hazard assessment. Dr. Korchevskiy and Dr. Wylie are leading the ASTM efforts to develop a new classification standard for elongate amphibole particles that will be presented for the first time.
Additionally, Dr. Korchevskiy will present a research poster during the conference’s Poster Session. His poster, “New Metrics of EMP Carcinogenicity: Modeling, Interpretation, and Applications,” showcases innovative modeling techniques to better understand the cancer-causing potential of elongate mineral particles and carbon nanotubes.
