Keeping up with new research on chemical exposures and health outcomes is an ongoing challenge for occupational health and risk assessment professionals. C&IH Research Epidemiologist Chris Sullivan will outline a practical approach in his session, “An Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Published Systematic and Rapid Review Methodologies Using a Real-World Case Study,” at the upcoming AIHA Rocky Mountain Section (AIHA-RMS) Fall Technical Conference.

The session adapts established systematic and rapid review methods into a model built on a clearly defined scope of work covering the research question, search strategy, inclusion and exclusion criteria, screening and extraction procedures, and risk-of-bias assessment. Participants will see how a decision-logic framework guides each effort from an initial rapid assessment to a defined checkpoint, where the findings determine whether the work expands into a full systematic review with dual independent screening, formal synthesis, and PRISMA 2020 reporting.

A real-world case study will show how a rapid approach compares with a full systematic review. Attendees will leave with a template for balancing thoroughness and efficiency, along with practical strategies for accessing subscription-based literature outside an academic setting.

The AIHA-RMS 32nd Annual Fall Technical Conference takes place November 10–11, 2026, at the Denver Police Protective Association in Denver, Colorado. Additional information and registration are available through the conference website.
