Inhalation Toxicology Publishes C&IH Study Modeling Mesothelioma Risk From Talcum Powder Exposure

A recent article co-authored by C&IH’s Dr. Andrey Korchevskiy and Dr. Ann Wylie applies Monte Carlo simulation methods to evaluate hypothetical mesothelioma risk associated with airborne exposure to talcum powder. The study, “A Monte Carlo Simulation for Evaluating Hypothetical Mesothelioma Risk in a Person Exposed to Talcum Powder,” was published in Inhalation Toxicology on June 26, 2026.

The study examines a hypothetical exposure scenario involving cosmetic talcum powder. As a worst-case scenario, it was assumed that talc contained some proportion of tremolite particles. Using Monte Carlo simulation, the authors modeled variability in exposure assumptions, particle characteristics, potency factors, and cumulative exposure to estimate lifetime mesothelioma risk.

The analysis estimated an upper-bound excess mesothelioma risk of 0.873 cases per 1,000,000 per lifetime, below the U.S. EPA benchmark commonly used for general-population carcinogenic risk evaluation. The study also found that the dimensional characteristics of the tremolite particles reported in talc were typical of non-asbestiform morphology.

The findings add to C&IH’s ongoing research on elongate mineral particles, examining how mineral habit and particle dimensions influence exposure reconstruction and risk assessment. The paper also demonstrates that excess mesothelioma risk in persons who used cosmetic talc during their lifetime can be considered negligible.
