National Western Mining Conference and Exhibition

C&IH President Eric Rasmuson and Director of Research and Development Dr. Andrey Korchevskiy will present a breakout session “Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems in Mining – Methodology and Benefits” on Tuesday March 22nd from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. at the 118th National Western Mining Conference and Exhibition.

Presentation Summary:

The U.S. mining industry has reduced the injury and fatality rates substantially, but further improvement is in the best interests of workers and management. This includes the development of effective management systems, such as Occupational Health and Safety Administrative Standard (OHSAS) 18001:2007. Many international mining operations are certified via compliance with OSHAS requirements or similar standards. Many also implement their own management systems using OHSAS 18001 or other models as a starting point. But what are the benefits of management systems in “real life” situations? Does implementation bring return on investment? This session will provide participants an opportunity to dig deeper into the structure, requirements, and procedures related to the OHSAS standard specification and assess the pros and cons of its application to mining. Novel approaches to hazard identification and risk assessment will also be presented.

The conference will take place March 21st through 24th at the Colorado Convention Center in downtown Denver.
