Toxicology

Protecting the Workplace and Community From Chemical Hazards with Advanced Toxicology Capabilities

work in the laboratory of forensic toxicology

Toxicology Capabilities Overview

  • Develop dose-response models for various hazards and predict toxic effects by chemical characteristics and dimensions of particles
  • Utilization of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling to assess the dispersion of particles and gases in human lungs
  • Organization of comprehensive toxicological studies, exposure modeling, and development of thresholds for acceptable exposures

Toxicity Assessment for Emerging Hazards by Board-Certified Toxicologists

C&IH has unique expertise performing toxicological evaluations for emerging chemical hazards when limited information is available. Our team can apply quantitative-structure activity relationship (QSAR) modeling and other approaches to test unknown or not well studied compounds. For unique, previously under-studied hazards, along with well-known toxic agents, we use state-of-the-art methodologies to evaluate and determine potency factors, unit risks, reference doses, and reference concentrations. C&IH has extensively published in leading toxicological journals, edited and authored books, and developed reference documents on toxicological assessment of existing and emerging toxicants.

Projects involving industrial hygiene, toxicology, and risk assessment are managed by C&IH staff with advanced degrees and educational backgrounds in toxicology, chemistry, biochemistry, mathematical modeling, mineralogy, and other areas. Our project teams are a collaboration of C&IH personnel that includes PhD scientists, board-certified toxicologists (DABTs), certified industrial hygienists (CIHs), and allied occupational health physicians specializing in toxicology.

Examples of Toxicological Assessment Activities

  • Systematic reviews and organization of comprehensive toxicological studies for workplace and environmental hazards
  • Authoring toxicological profiles and white papers in support of quantitative human health risk assessments for inhalation, dermal, and ingestion exposures in the workplace and/or environment
  • Quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) modeling for various agents including elongate mineral particles (EMP) and asbestos
  • Modeling of toxicokinetics of particulates and gases in human lungs using CFD methodology
  • Bioavailability and biopotency assessments of potential toxicants
  • Toxicological evaluations in support of process and product hazard communication including development of safety data sheets, product warning labels, and guidance on material handling and personal protective equipment
  • Evaluation and control of biologically transmitted toxic agents in healthcare settings for patient/occupant and service provider protection
  • Evaluation of chemical and biological agents that target the immune system including allergens, antigenic agents, or immunosuppressive agents that impact either the resistance to, or the severity of, certain disease conditions
  • Reproductive hazard evaluation for toxic agents
  • Evaluation of biological exposure markers through review of medical records or coordinated testing and analysis (for example, for tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) in blood lipids, radiological and/or pathological evidence of lung fibrosis associated with particulate inhalation, lung tissue or residual fiber analysis for asbestos, carboxyhemoglobin levels for carbon monoxide exposure, nerve conduction test interpretation for solvent exposure, etc.)
  • Organizing in vivo and in vitro research and analyzing their results to correctly characterize an agent for acute, chronic, and carcinogenic effects
